In the second game of the season this past Saturday, September 21st, the YSU Women's Rugby team came out with a win over WVU. The final score was 75-7. It was truly a team effort that won the game for The Penguins, with our rookies learning at an extremely fast pace in order to grow from our tough loss the week before, and the veterans improving in their organization and communication to make the team better as a whole.
Eight different players earned a try for YSU and two of our players scored multiple. In the first half, we kept WVU at bay, not allowing a single score. In the second half, WVU fought through to earn one try towards the end of the match. The YSU players that scored were Carly Weiss, Audrey Hoag, Saralynn Davis, Riley Saunders, Sierra Baker, and Beyonce Smith all with one try apiece. We'd like to give a special shout out to first-year player Audrey Hoag, who played flanker on Saturday, for scoring her first try in just her second match ever. Hannah Hall, scrum-half, scored the first two tries of the day. Angelique Williams, inside center, scored the most, tallying three tries total. The highest scorer was Riley Saunders, our conversion kicker and fullback. She made 10 out of 11 conversion kicks and scored a try, making her responsible for a total of 25 points throughout the whole game. Coming out of this weekend, the team is looking forward to our first away game at Gannon University. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. We will be working hard during the week to bring our best this weekend, and we hope to see you there! What a season opener! It was a nerve-wracking match to go into, but it went well. Last fall, YSU faced Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the conference championship and lost. At the end of the game, we had only 13 people left to field. It was a rough game and a tough loss. On Sunday, Sept. 15th, we went into this match with 22 players. A lot of them are brand-new to rugby or brand-new to the team, so we didn't know what to expect. However, we felt more confident going into this match than our last match of Fall 2018. Ultimately, YSU lost 7-43 to IUP. Despite this loss, there were a lot of positives for the team! Our rookies Anna, Dina, Olyvia, and Audrey took the field for the first time and did an amazing job. Everyone got their first tackle, and it seemed like everything they had learned in practice finally clicked. Congrats, rookies! In the first half of the game, YSU held IUP from scoring for about 10 to 20 minutes. That shows we have what it takes to beat a cohesive team like IUP. We are fit enough or are getting fit enough to go toe-to-toe with established teams. And we did score a try! Congrats to Carly for that quick tap at the penalty and to Riley for her conversion kick! But yes, we made a lot of mistakes and these mistakes cost us the game. We know our weaknesses now and are ready to address them this week in practice. Keep up with YSU Women's Rugby on social media and here on our website for details about our upcoming game against West Virginia University on September 21st. We are three weeks into the Fall 2019 school year, and with every new semester come changes. In this case, it's a website! The website was created to serve as a central hub for current players, future players, friends, family, and others to find information about our team, what our practice and game schedule is, how to join, how to contact us, and what rugby even is. This blog, "The Rugger Recap," will serve as a newsletter about how our games went and what the team is up to around campus and the community. Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming Media Day and our home game against Indiana University of Pennsylvania on September 15th at 5 p.m. in Stambaugh Stadium (directions can be found on the Schedule Page). |
