What a season opener! It was a nerve-wracking match to go into, but it went well. Last fall, YSU faced Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the conference championship and lost. At the end of the game, we had only 13 people left to field. It was a rough game and a tough loss. On Sunday, Sept. 15th, we went into this match with 22 players. A lot of them are brand-new to rugby or brand-new to the team, so we didn't know what to expect. However, we felt more confident going into this match than our last match of Fall 2018. Ultimately, YSU lost 7-43 to IUP. Despite this loss, there were a lot of positives for the team! Our rookies Anna, Dina, Olyvia, and Audrey took the field for the first time and did an amazing job. Everyone got their first tackle, and it seemed like everything they had learned in practice finally clicked. Congrats, rookies! In the first half of the game, YSU held IUP from scoring for about 10 to 20 minutes. That shows we have what it takes to beat a cohesive team like IUP. We are fit enough or are getting fit enough to go toe-to-toe with established teams. And we did score a try! Congrats to Carly for that quick tap at the penalty and to Riley for her conversion kick! But yes, we made a lot of mistakes and these mistakes cost us the game. We know our weaknesses now and are ready to address them this week in practice.
