In the second game of the season this past Saturday, September 21st, the YSU Women's Rugby team came out with a win over WVU. The final score was 75-7. It was truly a team effort that won the game for The Penguins, with our rookies learning at an extremely fast pace in order to grow from our tough loss the week before, and the veterans improving in their organization and communication to make the team better as a whole.
Eight different players earned a try for YSU and two of our players scored multiple. In the first half, we kept WVU at bay, not allowing a single score. In the second half, WVU fought through to earn one try towards the end of the match. The YSU players that scored were Carly Weiss, Audrey Hoag, Saralynn Davis, Riley Saunders, Sierra Baker, and Beyonce Smith all with one try apiece. We'd like to give a special shout out to first-year player Audrey Hoag, who played flanker on Saturday, for scoring her first try in just her second match ever. Hannah Hall, scrum-half, scored the first two tries of the day. Angelique Williams, inside center, scored the most, tallying three tries total. The highest scorer was Riley Saunders, our conversion kicker and fullback. She made 10 out of 11 conversion kicks and scored a try, making her responsible for a total of 25 points throughout the whole game. Coming out of this weekend, the team is looking forward to our first away game at Gannon University. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. We will be working hard during the week to bring our best this weekend, and we hope to see you there!
